I love plant medicine.
I love herbs, I love food, I love the teachings of plant medicine through sacred ceremonies and now I’ve discovered how much I also love essential oils.
It all began with some pesky acne outbreaks that I had been experiencing since I was pregnant with my daughter. For 18 years I had been experiencing acne on my back, or bacne as it is embarrassingly and grossly referred to. I hated it and I tried every possible thing I could think of; dietary change, allergy tests, bioidentical hormones, vitamins, minerals, homeopathy, even my own precious Chinese herbs and unfortunately, I did not have lasting success with any of it. Until a friend encouraged me to try some essential oils.
At first, I was hyper critical and skeptical as the company she was recommending I try was a networking marketing company. I just seem to have a natural distrust of them and the intention of the people selling them. Also, there tend to be a lot of “medical” claims coming from uneducated people that, in my opinion, are grounds for a lot of eye rolling. But I trust my friend and I trust her intentions, so I decided to try her brand and another popular brand that is also sold via direct sales.
I tried the one brand with no success, then I tried the brand she recommended.
I kid you not, within 6 weeks of using Frankincense, my back was clear.
But that wasn’t the only cool thing that was happening while I was using the oil. As I engaged in a relationship with frankincense, I noticed I was also going through a lot of emotional upheaval. There was a ton of old stagnant feelings of grief and sadness coming to the surface. It was a time of reflection and sitting with every single sensation that arose.
Once my back cleared, I said to my friend “I don’t know why but I have a feeling that the Frankincense is helping to drudge up all these emotions.” She was ecstatic and immediately directed me to what has now become a bit of a bible for us, a book called Emotions and Essential Oils.
Frankincense, as it happens, is the Oil of Truth.
It is all about bringing the darkness to the light. It allows people to let go of lower vibrations and negativity, I was astounded. THEN I remembered what a body talk practitioner had said to me once regarding my skin that had always stuck with me. She said that my skin was helping my process all the grief that I was holding onto. Aww, thanks body, you’re so damn smart. Once I understood this, and I knew it because it resonated so hard, I was able to actually have reverence for my skin and the wisdom of my body.
This turned me onto a whole new world of experimenting and exploring with plant medicines. Those of you who know me or who have had acupuncture with me know how much I incorporate emotions and behaviour into the work that we do together. Essential Oils seemed like a natural fit and I have since become a bit of a junkie. The response clinically so far has been positive. I incorporate the oils based on Chinese Medicine philosophy and I’ve started applying certain oils to different elemental organ systems through the Chinese lens.
Next week, in Part 2 I’ll take you through a few of the oils I have found that resonate with each of the 5 Elements. I’ll also talk a bit about each element as it relates to our mental emotional bodies.

See you then.
